Written by Elizabeth Kessler • Updated on: 11/02/23

Here is how to apply face masks at home. The steps to follow to ensure your skin gets its maximum benefits.

Face masks are one of those essential rituals that enhance your beauty. But do you really know how to use them? …when to, where to, which one?

To hydrate your skin, restore its vitality, and have a perfect complexion, face masks are perfect. They can be applied in different ways, depending on their purpose or texture. Discover with us the art of applying a face mask.

How to Apply Your Face Masks

Choose Face Masks According to Your Skin Type

The ideal frequency for applying your face mask is once a week. The perfect moment? At weekends, when you have the bathroom for yourself and want to unwind with a pampering ritual.

However, remain attentive to your skin’s reactions: it’s your best advisor!

A clay face mask

Whether it is based on green clay or red clay, clay masks are very popular with women with oily skin.

They dry the skin without harming it and purifies the pores, which are sometimes clogged with excess sebum or blackheads.

You can apply a clay face mask with your fingers, but the texture is sometimes difficult to spread.

For clay face masks, it is best to place the mask on the face with a small flexible spatula that will follow the curves of your face. Avoid eyes and mouth.

An exfoliating mask

To exfoliate the skin of your face, you can use a scrub directly or use a face mask that has an exfoliating action.

Generally, these face masks are in the form of a gel.

You place a small amount of the product on your finger and apply a thin layer over the entire face, making small circular movements to promote the exfoliation of dead skin.

Then leave to dry. When the gel film has dried, you can remove the face mask.

A homemade mask

Homemade face masks are very trendy. Based on natural and economical products, they are simple to make and apply. If your homemade face mask is based on vegetable oil, it may be runny.

Apply it with a clean cloth, brush, or even your fingers. If the texture is more consistent, your fingers or a spatula can drop your mask.

Pay attention to your eyes if your homemade face mask contains irritants.

Steps To Follow To Effectively Apply Face Masks

If you need to relax in the comfort of your own home, treat yourself to a facial treatment. Here’s how to get a fresh, radiant complexion in just six steps!

1. Cleanse your skin

No need of doing any deep treatment if your pores are clogged with sebum and impurities!

To guarantee the effectiveness of your face mask, start by thoroughly cleaning your face.

Put a few pumps of your cleansing oil on the palm of your hand or use cleansing pads and massage it in circular motions on your skin.

Finish with an abundant rinse of warm water, then gently wipe your face with a clean towel.

2. Steam your face

Do you want to treat yourself to a real spa moment? Do a facial steam bath!

For this step, you can use the modern facial sauna device or the traditional bowl, and towel method.

In addition to boosting the elimination of toxins, it dilates the pilosebaceous orifices and promotes deep penetration of your mask.

Place your face about 8 inches above a container of very hot water and cover your head with a towel to trap the steam. Stay about 10 minutes, being careful not to burn yourself.

3. Now, spread your face mask

If you have opted for a powder mask, gradually add a few drops of water to a dose of the product until you get a creamy consistency.

For the lucky ones who have a ready-to-use facial mask, you have nothing else to do (apart from opening the jar, all the same)!

Bring a brush to apply your face mask and take a little mixture. Spread it in a thick and uniform layer on your face and neck. Be careful to avoid the eye area carefully.

4. Let it sit… and relax

The specificity of the masks is that they have an exposure time.

The latter is variable depending on the concentration of active ingredients in your treatment: refer to the instructions for use indicated on its packaging… and strictly observe it!

NOTE: Exceeding the recommended exposure time for a face mask is not recommended and could attack your skin.

In the meantime, sit in an armchair and enjoy a moment of relaxation. After the time has elapsed, rinse with warm water.

5. Finish with a moisturizer

As beneficial as they can be, some masks may have a slight tendency to dry out the skin. This is the case with clay-based masks, often recommended for combination with oily skin.

To prevent your skin from trying to defend itself by producing excess sebum, provide it with plenty of hydration immediately after rinsing.

I prefer using a moisturizer loaded with SPF for more skin protection.

Particularly dry and thirsty skins, on the other hand, will be able to perpetuate the effects of their moisturizing face mask by following it with a deep hydration treatment.

Follow these steps on how to apply face masks to the latter and you will realize the ultimate benefits of these masks. They are important to help your skin get the best from this important routine care.
