Although commercial makeup removing wipes are very practical in the evening before going to bed, but not ecological and quite expensive. So we wondered if it was possible to make them yourself and the answer is: oh yes!
You can make it with natural products, for a fraction of the cost. This DIY recipe can be adapted in a number of ways.
I tried it with small round makeup remover pads (you can buy washable and reusable pads online ), but you could also do it with quartered paper towels or small washcloths.
You have to find a resealable container in which our tampons/wipes “fit”. For standard round make-up removing pads, a 250 ml Mason jar is perfect.
Make your own makeup removing wipes in just 3 minutes!
The Makeup Removing Wipes Recipe
To remove makeup effectively, you need a cleanser, a toner, and some oil that helps the makeup go away.
In addition to that, we can also add other ingredients, to perfume for example. Or a few drops of aloe vera, or tea tree oil for acne prone skin (but not to put in the eyes!)
- ½ cup (125 ml) hot water
- 2 tbsp. to tea Castile Lavender soap (could be replaced by a liquid soap “no tears” baby. The castile soap comes in unscented version or perfume, your choice).
- 2 tbsp. Tea of water witch hazel
- ½ tsp. Tea with sweet almond oil (it could also be of the vitamin E oil, the oil of coconut that melts in the microwave, or any other facial oil )
- A few drops of essential oil of your choice if the Castile soap is not scented (optional)
We mix our ingredients with a little hot water.
How much? It depends on the size of our container. For the 250ml mason jar, I needed 125ml of water. The bigger the container, the more water is needed.
Castile soap can be found in natural products stores, in various big box stores, or online.
Sweet almond oil and witch hazel can be bought at the pharmacy.
Witch hazel is a good product to have at home: it can be used to soothe bruises, insect bites, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids… And to tone the skin!
Preparation technique for our makeup removing wipes
- Stack the cleansing pads/wipes in our container. To keep it zero waste, use reusable makeup removal pads.
- Mix the ingredients together in a measuring cup.
- We pour everything slowly into our container, little by little, to allow the tampons to absorb the liquid.
- Close the container and let stand a few minutes before using it.
Final Verdict
- Not only does it take a hefty 3 minutes to make, but the makeup remover pads also smell great and work great!
- It is really effective for the face and despite the oil, the skin is not greasy after use. After my makeup removal, I rinsed my face with water and my skin was very soft!
- I tried it on the eyes, but I did not insist too much because the soap stung a little … Not that much, but next time, if I want the product to be used as much for the face as for the eyes, I’ll use less soap. Like just 1 tsp. to tea.
There you have it: a simplified makeup removal routine, which is great when it’s late and we don’t really feel like cleaning our face! #LifeSaver
DIY definitely adopted!
Even though buying the ingredients upfront isn’t “ cheap ” ($15 for Castile soap, $5 for witch hazel, and $6 for sweet almond oil), I could make wipes for YEARS AND YEARS with this quantity.
I didn’t do the exact math, but this container of wipes that will surely last me over a month is definitely less than $1.
And all of these ingredients have a plethora of other DIY uses around the house, so I know they won’t go to waste!
